Laszlo Hanyecz paid 10,000 bitcoin for two pizzas on May 22, 2010.
Here is the fascinating story.
The main players in this epic deal were:
Florida based programmer Laszlo Hanyecz, and an 18 year old student named Jeremy Sturdivant.
On May 18, 2010, Laszlo Hanyecz posted an offer on the Bitcointalk site to buy pizza with Bitcoin.
He said that anyone who ordered him a pizza and had it brought to his house would get 10,000 bitcoins.
“You can make the pizza yourself and bring it to my house or order it for me from a delivery place, but what I’m aiming for is getting food delivered in exchange for bitcoins where I don’t have to order or prepare it myself, kind of like ordering a ‘breakfast platter’ at a hotel or something, they just bring you something to eat and you’re happy!
I like things like onions, peppers, sausage, mushrooms, tomatoes, pepperoni, etc.. just standard stuff no weird fish topping or anything like that. I also like regular cheese pizzas which may be cheaper to prepare or otherwise acquire.”
A few days later, on May 22, 2010, Hanyecz made a deal with Jeremy Sturdivant aka “Jercos”.
The fact that Laszlo Heinitz didn’t pay the pizza messenger in person is interesting.
Jeremy Sturdivant, who purchased the pizza for Laszlo,
was in contact with him through the BitcoinTalk.org website.
Jeremy received 10,000 BTC from Laszlo in exchange, and the transaction took place through IRC (Internet Relay Chat).
This was the first known buy of real goods with bitcoin.
Back then, 10,000 bitcoins were worth about $41 while the price of two pizzas was $25.
Jeremy made the announcement not long after the deal finished that he had sold those 10,000 BTC for a total of $400. At that point, it made him a 10x win.
In total, Laszlo spent 100,000 BTC on pizzas.
Both Laszlo and Jercos have never regretted the deal.
The global crypto community celebrates the 22nd of May, the date of this monumental transaction.
They do things like buying pizza with Bitcoin, having pizza parties, and spreading the word about crypto.
Laszlo Hanyecz’s pizza purchase started the Bitcoin revolution.
